Flies that Catch Fish...That's the Objective!!

Capt. Doug Sinclair ~ Instructor

There are four schools of thought about fly-tying.

There is the purist, tying traditional flies from old Scottish Gordon's to Royal Wulffs.  These are mostly freshwater stream and insect flies.

Secondly you have the loyalist that will only tie a Clouser or Left's Deceiver - and they work.

And, then there is the tier who experiments, a little, with slight modifications to known patterns or come up with new patterns that actually work.

The last is a radical designer who has never fly-fished.
If you get really radical with fly design you might not catch anything.

The secret is to find a pattern that works, learn how to tie it and then go out and fool some fish.  As a saltwater fly-fishing guide, I'm always looking for the pattern that is going to work 99% of the time.  Whether on the flats, inshore estuary or bluewater, your clients are expecting to catch fish.  So you really need to understand the bait, bait movement patterns, seasons of the year, and what and when the predators will eat.

These courses will teach you what flies work and how to tie them.  Each week you will recieve a packet of material and a recipe to conquer a new pattern.

You will learn:

  • Thread wraps
  • Simple weed guards
  • Attaching Hackle & Pamering
  • Attaching Cone Heads & Eyes
  • Spinning & Stacking Deer Hair
  • Using & Applying Epoxy
  • Tieing Finishing Knots

Equipment Used:

  • Renzetti Rotary Vises
  • Gamakatsu Saltwater Hooks
  • Gudebrod GX2 & G Threads
